Courage as a Core Value
Courage is a value that continues to present itself in my life. The name “Coaching Courage” came to me one day at work. I thought of several names with courage in them. Suddenly, I repeated, Coaching Courage, Coaching Courage, Coaching Courage. I turned to a colleague and excitedly said Coaching Courage! That’s it! I have the name of my company! The name stuck because I believe every person has courage inside them. In order to become our best selves, we must learn to embrace our inner courage. Therefore, courage is intertwined in every aspect of what Coaching Courage, LLC offers through its services.
I completed the Georgetown University Leadership Coaching Cohort in 2020, and from the very beginning, I was forced to face my fears. On day one of class, I felt nauseated yet ecstatic to begin this journey. Little did I know, Cohort 58 would change my life and propel it in a direction I never could have imagined in my wildest dreams! I decided on day one, I am opening my heart and mind and stepping into the unknown. I exhibited an immense amount of courage in every facet of the cohort. The Merriam-Webster dictionary definition of courage is to have “mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty.”
I am sharing this with you to say, courage is a core value of mine and of Coaching Courage, LLC. Without courage, I would not be where I am today, starting my own business. Without courage, I would not be confident in who I am as a person. Without courage, I would not allow myself to navigate into uncharted waters trusting that I will be okay. And, if I do not allow myself to be vulnerable with you, how could I expect you to be vulnerable with me?
In the early days when the road to success became difficult, there were many times I thought about giving up. I am so glad I didn’t! I believe each person has courage within themself. I aim to help leaders discover this inner courage and embrace it as they face challenges in business. At Georgetown, I learned about cura personalis, a Latin phrase meaning “care of the whole person.” Cura personalis is a central tenet of the Georgetown approach to education. As a leadership coach, I am committed to you as a whole person, which includes all areas that influence you both professionally and personally.
We are perfectly imperfect human beings. I will work with you to mitigate the negative impact your imperfections have on you and others. I am a perfectionist and work daily to mitigate the negative impact this has on my internal dialogue as well as the impact on others. When I revert to feelings of self-doubt, I reframe the story I am telling myself to help me snap out of the negative self-talk loop. I remind myself that without setbacks in my life journey, to include injuries and judgment by others, I would not be the bold, fearless, and unique person I am today.
